how to style a maxi skirt

khaki doesn't have to be boring

I hope I’ve inspired you to try wearing mini skirts, but maxi skirts can be just as versatile, and sometimes just as intimidating!

If you’re short like me, you’ve probably been told that a maxi skirt will “overwhelm” you. If you’re tall, you might have been told a maxi skirt will only exaggerate your height (as if that’s some kind of bad thing).

Click here to subscribe to the Insider’s List, and I’ll send you a short series of posts on how to define your personal style, including one on how and when to ignore fashion “rules.”

The truth is anybody can wear a maxi skirt, and you can make one work for any occasion. You just have to pick one that makes you feel happy and confident, and then style it in a way that works for the occasion!

I’m always preaching against khaki, but this skirt has way too much personality to be boring! I styled it with a black and white striped top, because stripes go with everything.

The anjelica tote and a pretty scarf add color and more interest to the outfit, and classy gold jewelry and amazing boots finish off the look.

You could absolutely wear this to the office! You could wear cute little kitten heels and wear it on a date. You could switch out the shoes for flats and wear this outfit all weekend.

Have I convinced you to think about maxi skirts in a new way?

stripes go with everything, part 4: windowpane check

windowpane check

Windowpane check is one of my favorite patterns – it’s really just stripes masquerading as a plaid! It looks good in any color combination, and can be made appropriate for any occasion.

This midi skirt is a great foundation for an outfit to wear to the office (click the image to shop any part of the look). The navy and red give it a classic look, while the large scale of the check gives it a little drama.

A plain navy top and bag would defeat the purpose of such a great skirt, so instead I styled it with a blouse with unusual tailoring, and the anjelica tote, which is equally dramatic with its bold windowpane check in gold stitching.

Pearl jewelry a bit different than the usual (black and gold pearls rather than the more common variety) finishes off the look with a bit of class and a lot of style. Who knew preppy could be so edgy?

the denim dress formula: how to wear red to the office

how to wear red to the office

Sometimes you need a little pick-me-up, a shot of something to get you through the (work) week. Wearing red is the perfect fake-it-till-you-make-it hack for looking and feeling energized when you really just want to take a nap!

For this edition of the denim dress formula, I picked a dress with simple, clean lines. The anjelica tote was the obvious choice for the awesome bag portion of the formula, because of it’s classic windowpane check and bright red ultrasuede.

Retro-style shoes with a low heel and another shot of red round out the look, along with some other red accessories, to keep your energy level up all day (you might as well make color theory work for you)!

how to wear a miniskirt to the office

It’s been a while since I’ve had an office job, but I still remember the near-daily angst of what to wear to work.

Then there was the guilt when you bought something that wasn’t work appropriate. You were being impractical. Shame!

What if I told you that you could still wear your fun clothes to the office? It’s all about the styling!

This post is all about how to wear miniskirts to the office. Whether you are fresh out of college or on your 20th anniversary in the workforce, you can absolutely wear a cute little skirt to work without looking inappropriate or feeling silly. Check it out:

choose clean lines

Regardless of how casual or formal your workplace is, you always want to look professional. Miniskirts are already so cute, wearing one with frills or pleats or other fussy details can make you look too cute, even in a very casual office environment. A skirt with clean lines like a pencil or A-line shape is easy to wear and looks professional.

I styled this outfit with the regina tote bag, because it’s mandala-style design is pretty but not cutesy, which is perfect for the sophisticated look you’d want at the office.

You want to look like a boss, not a cheerleader!

choose tailored details

There’s a reason suit jackets almost always have notched collars or folded lapels – tailored details like that effortlessly make a garment more formal and more serious.

This same little skirt paired with a plain sweater would be instantly unworthy of the C-suite, because it would lack the tailored details that signal “I am someone to be taken seriously.”

Elegant, high-impact accessories like white jade jewelry and the gloria tote further lend themselves to your serious look.

choose rich textures

Tweed is a traditional choice for business wear, because it has a long history of being quite serious and formal. It’s pretty impossible to look silly in tweed. But it’s also incredibly interesting and fun to wear: it comes in so many colors and patterns!

The anjelica tote is made of high-relief denim quilting and red ultrasuede, the kind of rich textures that coordinate perfectly with a tweedy skirt and jacket. Together, they’ll definitely help you look more CEO than schoolgirl.

choose to express yourself

There’s no reason you can’t be office-appropriate and still feel confident and happy! Don’t think you have to cramp your personal style to look professional.

This is an outfit that I would personally wear to the office, because I love that color green, and I love bold floral prints. I also love mixing florals with strong graphics, like the wavy chevron on the cassandra tote.

(Despite the more flamboyant designs, this outfit still totally works for the office: the clean lines, the embroidery on the skirt and stitching on the bag, and the pleats and cuffs on the the top hit all the points I mentioned above.)

What are the hallmarks of your personal style? What colors and patterns make you happy when you wear them? What kind of garments and accessories make you feel confident when you put them on?

versatile style: the student and the ceo

You might think a versatile bag for a busy CEO would have to be neutral for her to get the most use out of it.

Similarly, you might assume that a student would need a bag that was practical above all else – she wouldn’t have time or money to switch bags constantly!

You would be absolutely right in these assumptions! Except…those words don’t mean what you think they mean.

the student and the ceo

Practical does not mean “plain,” and neutral does not mean black or brown!

The anjelica tote bag pairs dark blue denim with bright red ultra suede, and a bold windowpane check in gold stitching.

She is bold and bright and not at all plain, but most importantly: abundant in versatile style!

The anjelica tote is perfect for the student, because red looks great with all the purple and blue she likes to wear. It’s big enough to hold everything she’d need for a full day on campus, and it will seamlessly transition to summer when she starts her internship!

The CEO makes a bold statement with the anjelica tote because – let’s face it – everyone she works with is probably carrying a plain black bag. Their briefcases probably came from a place where there are at least a hundred other bags just like it. The anjelica tote is sophisticated enough for her needs without being boring, but also helps her stand out in the crowd!

Both ladies get to be effortlessly, uniquely stylish carrying the same tote bag, even though they have drastically different lifestyles. Click here to see more of the anjelica tote, and imagine how she could help you feel effortlessly stylish!
