the most wonderful time of the year: fall preview

It’s that time…the best time of year for dressing well! I’m talking about fall, of course.

You guys…I LOVE the summer and I LOVE warm weather, but there’s something about fall fashion that makes me swoon. It’s my favorite time to get dressed, and my favorite time to design for.

Soon, you’ll see all my love in the shop!

the andromeda button scarf in gray and blue

A new batch of my best-selling button scarves, featuring new fabrics, new paintings, and new stitched motifs (like “andromeda” shown above).

Some will be lined in flannel to be cozy and warm, and some will be lined with linen, for a lighter weight way to feel happy and stylish. Last year we had 70 and 80 degree days well into November, so there’s no reason to think that won’t be true this year…you might as well be prepared either way!

Most people don’t know this, but I do actually make awesome stuff for guys, too. I’ll be adding a new batch of handmade neckties to the shop this fall as well!

(The neckties are stylish and colorful enough for ladies too, of course.)

I will also be adding new mini-collections of my most recent handbag styles, the 517 totes and the crossbody bags. I’ve gotten so much great feedback on both styles, I can’t wait to show you the new motifs and new fabrics! One of the crossbody bags is going to be in the same delicious pewter metallic leather as the sheba wrap belt, check it out:

First up, the Black Owned Small Business Expo is on Small Business Saturday this year, November 25.

The Expo will be held at the Waldorf Culture Center (109 Post Office Rd, Waldorf MD 20602), 9:30 am – 4:00 pm. Drop by to see more than sixty small business owners from the DC area, representing a wide variety of products and services. Come by and shop small, and support your local community this Thanksgiving weekend instead of big box stores!

The following Tuesday, I’ll be launching another mini-collection of a new handbag style, plus a restock of favorite gifts from the shop like the neckties and the perfect pouches. As always, Insiders will enjoy a special price on these limited edition accessories.the small perfect pouch, the mini perfect pouch, a keychain and the 19th st wallet

That weekend, I’ll be in Richmond for the Richmond Craft Mafia’s Handmade Holiday Show! It’s now a two day show, so make sure to come out both Saturday and Sunday to see me and a ton of other amazing independent makers.

The show will be held at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, from 11am to 6pm on both days.

Tuesday morning is the start of the biggest sale of the year at Holland Cox, when everything goes on sale (even handbags from last season that have been marked down). You surely don’t want to miss this, so make sure you’ve subscribed to the Insider’s List so you get notified bright and early that morning!

I’m thrilled to again be a vendor at GRUMP, surely the most interesting holiday shopping venue in DC. The GRUMP Arts & Crafts Show will be happening 12pm to 5pm in the Crystal City Underground.

The finale of the holiday season will be my anniversary party and trunk show, where I will be celebrating 13 years of designing and making for Holland Cox! If you’d like to attend, you must be a subscriber to the Insider’s List, and indicate that you live in the DC area to receive an invitation.

It will be an afternoon of sweets, champagne, and shopping, and a great way to say thank you to my customers, and finish off another awesome year.

In addition to the big sale that starts December 5, I’ll have special promotions at each event as well, so it will definitely be worth it to shop in person! Hope to see you at lease once in the next few weeks!

sneak peek of the new crossbody bag

The newest addition to the evolution collection is a completely new handbag for me, but I think you’ll recognize the bones of it as very much Holland Cox style. You’ll also see plenty of evidence of my love of texture and color!

I wanted to design a casual, pretty bag that you could use everyday. Something a bit smaller than the everyday bags, but not so small that your daily essentials wouldn’t fit. I also wanted a long, cross-body strap that was as good looking as the bag itself!

a sneak peek of the new crossbody style bag at Holland Cox

I began by expanding the perfect pouch, and then I added pockets – a flat patch pocket on the inside (perfect for your ID cards, a pack of gum, a pen, a pack of tissues), and a welt zip pocket on the outside (the exact size of my iPhone 7 Plus).

Gold hardware and brass zippers were a no-brainer, since I’ve been in love with shiny gold for a while now (not sorry!!!). Ultrasuede zip pulls (with a hand painted bead on the main zip) finish off both zippers, because I love the look of them, and they are a great way to add another little bit of color!

the back pocket of the crossbody pouch

I’ve decided the back pocket is critical on any handbag I carry! I really like having a place that is instantly accessible, that I can just reach into without removing the straps or opening the bag.

I actually didn’t plan on the pocket being iPhone-sized, I picked a 7″ pocket because that’s what made sense to me, based on the size of the bag (11″ wide and 7″ tall, with a 9″ zipper). But I figure it can only be a good thing if your phone is within easy reach!

removable crossbody strap

The strap is 48″ long, just long enough for the pouch to sit right on your hip, making it easy to slip your hand inside either zipper.

I know most bags like this have adjustable straps, but I didn’t want to do that for my design, for two reasons. First, I hate buckles (random, but here we are…I actually have an aversion to excessive hardware on handbags…an unpopular opinion, I know).

Part of the reason I don’t like buckles on straps, is that I don’t believe that most people want an adjustable strap; what they want is a strap that is the exact right length for them!

So you’ll be able to order the strap for your crossbody pouch in a custom size if 48″ isn’t right for you!

metallic denim, painted canvas, and stitched ultrasuede

In a few weeks, I’ll be introducing a mini-collection of the crossbody pouch (only six of them!), featuring some of my favorite fabrics and motifs from the current collection. Felicity (painted polka dots on natural canvas) will definitely be featured, and of course persephone in red and blue (my favorite abstract petal motif).

I’m also going to be using lots of this delightful dark, midnight-blue denim with gold metallic threads that I am absolutely in love with.

(I’ve already bought up every yard I can get my hands on.)

But at least two of the mini-collection will feature some of the metallic leather I got in NYC recently…I can’t wait to show the finished bags to you!

Get on the list, because subscribers to the Insiders List always see the new collections first, and they get an exclusive introductory price (which means if you’re an Insider, you never have to pay full price)!

six more outfit upgrades with a button scarf

I’ve already shown you how to upgrade your wardrobe basics (like a pencil skirt) with a button scarf. Now that the new collection is out, here are six more outfit ideas for you, proof that accessories as bold and colorful as a button scarf can also be versatile and practical!

your date night outfit

the anjelica button scarf with your date night outfit
I feel very confident guessing that your go-to date night outfit includes something black.

(Am I wrong?)

The anjelica scarf in black metallic essex linen is pretty much a guaranteed show-stopper. Pair it with anything black, and suddenly your favorite thing (which you already love) is even better! A little bit of shine and a little bit of style goes a long way.

(Also shown: the felicity small perfect pouch)

your favorite dress

the rosetta button scarf with a black and white dress
The button scarves are a great way to add a shot of color, and the rosetta button scarf is a perfect example.

This fabric is actually a very subtle tonal rose print, in shades of red that are intense rather than extremely bright. Picture it with every black-and-white item in your closet, and visualize the instant upgrade!

your classic trench coat

the cassandra 517 tote and the cassandra scarf with your classic trench coat
Naturally, the button scarves integrate seamlessly with your outerwear, regardless of the weather.

With a trench coat this classy and stylish, how could you pair it with a plain scarf? The cassandra button scarf (available in winter and autumn versions) is worthy of your designer outerwear, and will instantly upgrade anything else you wear with it.

(Also shown: the cassandra 517 tote)

your skinny jeans

black and gold button scarf from Holland Cox with your skinny jeans
The carla button scarf is bold simplicity at it’s finest: a sweet floral print is rendered in metallic gold, on a black background for maximum impact.

Think of every black dress, shirt, and sweater you own, and imagine wearing them with this dose of glamour and style, instead of all alone.

Your skinny jeans and favorite black top will never look the same again!

(Also shown: the phoenix small perfect pouch)

your floral blouse

the aida button scarf from Holland Cox with your favorite office outfit
The button scarves are a great way to experiment with mixing prints, especially the aida button scarf, which is in a subtle crosshatch pattern in black and white. It will look amazing with lots of different prints in different scales and colors, because stripes go with everything!

Afraid to mix prints? Afraid to wear even ONE print much less mix them? Get on the Insider’s List…subscribers get a short series of posts from me about how to find your personal style through easy and creative experimentation…click here to sign up!

If you want to experiment with mixing prints but are afraid to jump in, know that black and white stripes (FYI: checks — like on this skirt, and on the aida button scarf — are just stripes in a different shape) literally go with everything. You can’t get this one wrong, so don’t be scared to give it a try!

your favorite t-shirt

a gold button scarf with your favorite t-shirt outfit
Just because the button scarves have a very elegant and stylish vibe, does not mean you can’t break one out on the weekend, when you’re wearing your favorite snarky t-shirt! High style doesn’t have to be a lot of work, especially when you have a bold, easy-to-wear accessory like a button scarf.

(Shown here: the nichelle autumn button scarf, and the lola mini perfect pouch)

Want some ideas on how to wrap and button up the scarf? So far, I’ve come up with eleven different ways to wear them (check out 7 ways here, plus 4 more ways here), and I can’t wait to show you more! In the mean time, What’s in your closet that could do with an upgrade?

how to shop smarter this fall

Even if you’re not technically going back to school, this time of year is still about starting fresh! You might be eyeing your closet right now with a mind to update, but without having an idea of how to go about such a thing…here’s some ideas to get the most out of your “back to school” shopping!

The bottom line is, remember that practical does not mean plain. Next time you go shopping, walk right past the plain, “neutral” basics and try these three strategies instead:

shop for interesting textures

the cassandra tote with an embroidered top and dark blue jeans

The easiest way to escape from the trap of plain is to look for interesting textures when you go shopping. You might find this easier and less intimidating shopping for bold prints or bright colors. In fact, you can be totally monochromatic with an interesting texture, and you’ll still probably be the best dressed in the room!

The outfit above assumes you already have a pair of jeans you love, and cute booties to wear with them. Instead of shopping for a new, plain top to wear with them, how about something with embroidery, applique, beading, lace, or some other kind of surface design? A top with more visual interest will instantly elevate anything you wear with it, and will coordinate with more things in your closet than a plain version ever could.

I love the effect of an interesting texture, which is why I designed my latest handbags with high-relief quilting. The cassandra 517 tote is shown above, featuring my favorite chevron wave motif stitched in black thread on natural canvas. Click here to see more details on the cassandra tote, and think about what plain thing from your closet you could replace with a textured version!

shop for your colors

the persephone tote with navy trousers and a printed blouse

You probably already have navy pants, and a pair of “nude” pumps from a few years ago when everyone insisted you must own a pair. When you’re out shopping for a way to update them, think about color instead of more plain. What colors do you like to wear? Which colors look great on you? What colors make you feel happy and confident?

If you’re afraid of bright colors, an accessory is a great way to experiment. I would totally feel comfortable wearing the outfit above with a bright red blouse, but maybe that’s scary to you! A bag like the persephone tote is easier to wear than clothing in the same colors. If wearing red makes you happy, now you have an awesome bag to carry everyday that will get much more use than a plain black bag. See how that works?

shop for interesting silhouettes

the sofia tote with a black bell sleeved dress

I can hear some of y’all complaining but Valerie I love wearing all black that’s ~my thing~ and you can’t make me stop! Good news my friend, I am not going to tell you to stop wearing black!

But next time you go shopping, how about looking for new and interesting silhouettes?

The bell-sleeved dress in this outfit is an excellent example. Dramatic sleeves have been a thing for a while now, and I don’t think they’ll be going away anytime soon. This same dress with plain sleeves would be absolutely nothing to write home about, and not a way to make yourself feel happy and confident when you get dressed in the morning! The interesting sleeves make all the difference.

This is what I was thinking when I designed the 517 totes…I wanted a simple tote design that was nevertheless dramatic and interesting, and worthy of being your new favorite bag. One of the ways I chose to do that was to make them a slightly unusual shape: they are slightly taller than usual, and have gentle curves where most totes are built on straight lines.

You can do the same thing with your fall shopping! Just remember that practical does not mean plain, and you’ll end up with a new wardrobe that will make you much happier than anything basic ever could!

elevate the everyday

I believe the otherwise-mundane things you use every day should be pretty and colorful, and make you feel happy and confident.

the small perfect pouch from Holland CoxIf you carry a big bag every day, you probably have several little pouches inside to organize all your daily essentials. I hope you are not settling for something plain or “neutral”!  You deserve something that reflects your personality and style, and I’m willing to bet you are neither plain nor neutral on the inside.

The perfect pouch will soon have several companions, starting with the small perfect pouch shown above.  It can fit much more than the few things shown here, but I wanted to give you an idea of scale. Mine swallows up my sunglasses as well as lots of other bits of handbag detritus, in the cutest way possible!the perfect pouch family from Holland CoxIn addition to the small perfect pouch, the mini pouch and the 19th street wallet will soon be available as well, individually and it lovely gift sets. Get on the list to be notified when each new item gets added to the shop!

The 19th street wallet is a slim, double sided card case that I have been making for at least a decade…I must have made thousands of them by now (that is a lot of blind stitching)! The 2017 version is a tad bit bigger, so you can fit more cards/cash/what-have-you inside, and is made with heavier fabric on the outside, to guarantee a longer life.

the mini perfect pouch from Holland Cox

The mini perfect pouch is my evolved change purse…a bit bigger (actually big enough to keep your 19th st wallet inside if you like), and with much more style and personality. These are so cute, I’ve been giving them away as little prizes for my best customers, and gifts to anyone I want to impress. Next time you need to stock up on hostess gifts, get a stack of these instead of cheap wine from the grocery store!

The small perfect pouch is coming out first, but soon there will be a whole family of perfect pouches the main collection. Subscribe to the Insider’s List so you don’t miss the big debut (and you don’t have to pay full price on your favorites)!

four more ways to wear your button scarf

New button scarves are now available in the shop, designed especially for those autumn days that quickly shift between hot and cold. Not only do they make a great accessory for your transitional outfits, they make an awesome addition to your year-round capsule wardrobe!

I’ve already shown you 7 ways to wear your button scarf with some winter varieties, but here are four more ways to make all your outfits bold and bright.

with both buttons + the lining folded inwards

the Holland Cox button scarf in gold chevron

This is the carmela scarf, shown with both buttons done up, and the top edge folded inside. This is a great way to show off the print on the scarf, and hide the lining if you’d rather not incorporate the contrast into your look.

It also makes the scarf look a bit fuller, even with the lightweight linen/cotton blend lining. This is also a great way to show off the pretty akoya shell buttons!

with one button + the lining folded inwards

handpainted button scarf in gold and black essex linen from Holland Cox

The persephone scarf is perfect for this look, as it really showcases the abstract petal shape to the maximum! With only one button done up, they are both hidden, so this look is all about the scarf itself and not the buttons.

This is the kind of accessory that could easily be the star of any capsule wardrobe, as it would look amazing with pretty much any solid color top or dress. Imagine the possibilities!

The persephone scarf is perhaps best example from my latest collection of how neutral doesn’t have to mean plain or boring.

with one button + styled asymmetrically

the anjelica button scarf from Holland Cox

Instead of starting with the flat part against your neck, you can start with the curved edge instead, and you get a completely different look!

This shows the anjelica scarf with the curved edges against the neck, and styled with one button done up, so the scarf sits asymmetrically around your neck. It’s a very dramatic look, and perfect for the scarves with an all-over pattern stitched in, like the anjelica scarf and the cassandra scarf.

You’ll want to wear your scarf this way when your outfit is otherwise very sedate and conservative, but you still want to make a big impact! This look is guaranteed to turn heads, and make people wonder who you are and why you’re so impossibly stylish and confident. 🙂

styled asymmetrically + the lining folded down

hand painted button scarf from Holland Cox

A variation on the previous look, this style option will let you show off the lining of your button scarf. It adds another dimension to your look, and can help tie in the scarf with other elements of your outfit. Shown here is the octavia scarf, featuring hand painted gold stars with black stitching, and lining in a natural flax color.

All the autumn button scarves are lined in essex linen, a linen/cotton blend that is soft and flexible, making them easy to wear through the autumn and early days of winter.

Are you inspired to try some of these looks? Check out all of the button scarves in my shop and figure out which ones will work best with your wardrobe! Imagine how each one could elevate your capsule wardrobe, and transform your favorite outfits into something outstanding.
